The Argentine G20 presidency, Argentina’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology, and Argentina’s National Institute of Youth have made available a series of open educational resources for teachers and students to replicate Model G20 at any school in Argentina or around the world.

Educ.ar, the education portal of Argentina’s Ministry of Education, sets out the rules of Model G20, with a thematic guide on the future of work – one of the 2018 G20 priorities –, recommended classroom activities and a step-by-step teacher’s guide.  The materials, which are only available in Spanish for now, will be launched in English next month.  

The goal of Model G20 is for students to learn about how the G20 works through first-hand experience. The simulations foster student involvement in and understanding of global issues and international relations, and helps students with decision-making, negotiation and consensus-building skills.

Students work in the classroom for several weeks improving their understanding of international politics, with a view to developing the discourses of the G20 countries and organizations for the simulation exercise. The day of the exercise, each country and international organization is represented by three students acting as the finance minister who leads the Finance Track, the sherpa who represents the president or head of State in all G20 meetings before the summit, and the leader or head of State. Their role is to debate and discuss the future of work, one of the priorities of the Argentine G20 presidency.

During the exercise, students look to build consensus – one of the core aspects of the G20 – on an issue that is particularly relevant for young people today as they contemplate their future professional lives.

Model G20 in Viedma

Students from high schools Río Negro No. 8 and Padre Juan Edmundo Vecchi, both located at the city of Viedma, in northern Patagonia, took part today in a new Model G20 exercise, organized by the Argentine G20 presidency, Argentina’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology, and Argentina’s National Institute of Youth, and coordinated by the civil association MINU.
